I based my piece on the opening few bars of Elgar's first Pomp and Circumstance march. The material for the first 30 seconds or so refers directly to Elgar's opening phrase. I added offbeat piano chords for extra punch, as well as a few extra harmonies and rhythmic developments. After a brief section of lively runs, and one of relative calm, the piece makes a playful turn, ending suddenly with a flute and clarinet flourish.
With many thanks to the performers - Annie Lydford (flute), Max Welford (clarinet), Emma Adlard (oboe), Elise Campbell (horn), Toby Young (bassoon) and Dr David Knotts (piano); and for the generous support of the Exuberant Trust.
